Summer crime prevention advice

With the summer months now with us, Spondon Safer Neighbourhood Team offer advice on Crime Prevention measures which can be undertaken in order to ensure you do not become a victim of crime.

During the Summer months, when the nights draw out, Police traditionally receive an increase in reports of offences committed by the opportunist thief. These offences include thefts from vehicles and burglaries. Please make note of the following points and take appropriate action where you feel it is necessary;

  • Lock your vehicle and ensure all windows are closed.
  • Remove any valuable items from display in your vehicle, ideally taking everything into your property.
  • Remove any marks left on your windscreen by a satellite navigation system.

    In relation to properties;

  • Ensure you lock your door behind you and close all windows when you go out, especially downstairs windows.
  • Set a house alarm if possible when your property is empty.
  • Keep any gates or fences closed were possible.
  • Move window and house keys out of locks.

    If you are going on holiday, consider alerting a trusted neighbour or family member who may be able to close the curtains in your property at night and ask them to keep an eye on your house for you. You can also set a light on a timer which makes it appear the property is not empty.
